Due to its high class sport venues the capital stages regularly sports highlights like the 12th IAAF world championships in athletics in summer 2009, the European Championships in beach volleyball 2010, the FIFA women's Soccer World CupTM and the European championships in gymnastics 2011. Annual highlights are the the BMW-Berlin-Marathon, the athletics meeting ISTAF, the six-days lasting indoor biking race or the "DFB Pokal-Finale" - the yearly final of the German Football Association.

In 2011, 44 athletes from Berlin participated in 13 events at world- and European Championships or Olympic Winter Games and achieved 71 medals (29 x gold, 26 x silver, 16 x bronze).

According to studies of the journals SportBusiness International and the research institutes Hamburger Weltwirtschaftsinstitut 2008 and 2009 Berlin scores second (only to Melbourne) on the global ranking list of the most impressive sports cities in the world! Nationally Berlin is the sports metropolis number 1 and therefore the capital of sports.

145 teams compete in Germany´s first and second divisions for their daily success. The soccer players from Hertha BSC and 1. FC Union Berlin , the basketball players from Alba Berlin (Basketball), the ice hockey team EHC Eisbären, the handball players from the Füchse Berlin and the volleyball players from BERLIN RECYCLING Volleys make the capital to a city of sports.
